Petra-Zyme FAQ'S
-
Can I use Petra-Zyme on sterile soil?
Yes, but we recommend mixing other local soils into the sterile soil before applying Petra-Zyme. That will bring bacteria from the non-sterile soils into the sterile soil. The enzymes will then make these bacteria more active so they can break down the petroleum particles.
Note: When working with sterile soils, you may need to apply more Petra-Zyme than normal. For questions about your specific soil, contact us. We’re happy to help!

What enzymes are in Petra-Zyme?
Petra-Zyme contains a mix of enzymes, along with a trade-secret blend of ingredients that work together to produce bioemulsifiers.

-
Is Petra-Zyme biodegradable?
Yes, bacteria in the soil will biodegrade Petra-Zyme over time. In fact, the enzymes in Petra-Zyme actually help those bacteria work faster, so once the petroleum particles are gone, the Petra-Zyme will biodegrade, too.
-
How much Petra-Zyme should I use?
The amount of Petra-Zyme you’ll use varies based on the type and severity of petroleum contamination. Here are some common usage rates:
- ≤ 10,000 Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH): Apply 0.25 gallons of Petra-Zyme per four gallons of water weekly for five weeks.
- ≥ 10,000 Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH): Apply 0.25 gallons of Petra-Zyme per four gallons of water weekly for six or more weeks, depending on the severity of contamination.
- Diesel: Apply 0.25 gallons of Petra-Zyme per four gallons of water weekly for eight to nine weeks.
- Crude Oil: Apply 0.75 gallons of Petra-Zyme per four gallons of water weekly for five weeks.
- Surface Water: Apply eight gallons of Petra-Zyme per surface acre for three to four weeks.

What's the shelf life?
Petra-Zyme has a shelf life of up to two years with proper storage. We recommend storing Petra-Zyme in a dry, well-ventilated area with temperatures between 40°F and 120°F. Be sure to store containers vertically to prevent leaks and spills.
-
How do I handle Petra-Zyme safely?
Petra-Zyme is easy to handle safely because it’s non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-reactive. That said, we do recommend protective eyewear in case the product splashes. It’s also a good idea to clean up any spills right away, as Petra-Zyme can be slippery.

-
Does Petra-Zyme change soil's oxygen content?
Yes. Petra-Zyme adds oxygen to treated soils. This oxygen and the enzymes in Petra-Zyme work together to fuel naturally occurring bacteria that break down the petroleum particles.
