Featured Road

Challenge: Glenn County had a stubborn half-mile stretch on Road 37 that was constantly in need of maintenance due to heavy tractors, loaded harvest trucks, and daily residential traffic. The native clay soil, combined with seasonal erosion and the heavy farm traffic created deep washboarding, heavy dust clouds during the dry season, and ongoing maintenance demands. The county needed a road that could withstand daily use while reducing dust and maintenance.

Results: Back in 2011, the county decided to treat the worst section of Road 37 with Perma-Zyme. The goal was to create a hard, durable surface that could support heavy farming equipment without flexing and washboarding. After 15 years, this half-mile road is still performing well. The treated clay hardened into a rock-solid surface that broke the cycle of washboarding and rutting, giving local farmers and residents a reliable road year-round. Because the road holds together so well, dust has dropped significantly, and the county road department has drastically cut down on maintenance costs. Instead of focusing on this same half mile road every season, the crew has been freed up to tackle other critical infrastructure projects across the county.
