Challenge: In Central Michigan, this Genesee County native roadbed was an inconsistent, messy mix of different soil types that simply couldn't handle the region's intense rain and snow. The severe weather caused constant rutting, requiring the crew to perform non-stop regrading just to keep the corridor passable. And when the weather finally dried out in the summer, the road suffered from severe, blinding dust. To address these issues, the county routinely applied magnesium chloride for dust control and imported limestone to try and stabilize the surface. However, these traditional materials quickly washed out or broke down, requiring frequent, expensive reapplications. The county was stuck in a costly maintenance loop and needed a permanent, long-term stabilization method.
Results: Using Perma-Zyme to stabilize the existing clay and limestone blend, the road hardened into a reliable, durable surface that has withstood everything the rigorous Michigan winters can throw at it, including freezing temperatures and heavy spring thaws. Five years later, the road continues to perform through rain, snow, and freeze-thaw cycles with no rutting, significantly less dust, and minimal maintenance.
