Challenge: The City of Abilene needed a long-term solution for a busy, unpaved mile-long stretch right in the middle of town. Because it acts as a major shortcut from one side of the city to the other, it sees non-stop daily traffic. In addition to cars, local farmers use it for heavy agricultural equipment, and oil companies use it for hauling. Managing these heavy axle loads on untreated dirt was a losing battle, resulting in maintenance issues that included severe rutting and washboarding, flood damage, and rising dust control costs.
Results: Due to the dry summer heat, extra water trucks were needed to ensure the correct application. With the help of the extra water, Perma-Zyme stabilized the native soil to create a hard, concrete-like surface. Years later, even with heavy oil tankers and daily city traffic, it still behaves like a stable, durable roadway. The county now has a highly reliable, low-dust connector road that stands up to heavy industrial loads without requiring a massive paving budget.
